Little Bio

Hi, I'm a medical doctor who has specialised in Anaesthesia and Pain medicine, qualifying as a doctor in 1976, and a specialist is 1983. I was a specialist anaesthetist at Tygerberg Hospital and the University of Stellenbosch Medical School, South Africa, until 1991, when I started my own private practice. During that time I was involved with teaching of undergraduate medical and post-graduate anaesthesia diploma students. Since 1983 I have worked in the Tygerberg hospital Pain Clinic, and have continued to do so for one day a week, as a part time consultant. The administration of anaesthesia has become a small part of my daily work - less than 20% - the most time being spent in consulting with and treating persons in pain, in keeping up with publications in the field of chronic pain management, and in trying to transfer academic knowledge to clinical practice in a country where my speciality is not recognised as a priority, with virtually no state or private funding of clinical or research work. The latter includes disseminating information to general practitioners and to state and health funding institutions about modern thought on pain management. So by virtue of circumstances, I am an academic activist, rather an academic publicationist, with a desire to educate the public and authorities on the problems and possibilities of pain management in my country. Everyday interests include cooking, photography, digital art, reading, and fixing things.
