Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889-30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who ruled as Chancellor of Germany from January 1933, and Führer (Leader) of Germany from August 1934 until his death in 1945. Hitler came to power as leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or NSDAP), more commonly known as the Nazi Party. Hitler's aggressive foreign policy, amongst other factors, are widely-recognised as contributing directly to the outbreak of World War II in Europe in September 1939, whilst his racial ideologies are generally considered to have inspired and facilitated the Holocaust.
