The Niagara Power Authority uses this custom-built icebreaker in winter to break up large chunks of ice in the Niagara River before they plunge over Niagara Falls and possibly cause an ice jam. This ship also prevents ice in winter and floating hazards in summer from blocking the tunnel water intakes of NYPA's power plants on the river.
